In the Mende tongue, the predominant tribal language in our region, Baomahun literally means “village of gleanings.”  How appropriate for Gather The Fragments Bible Mission to have its base of operations in the village of Baomahun.  Children, especially orphans, are little fragments which fall through the cracks of life in Sierra Leone.  A major part of our mission effort is directed to these children.

Children are always curious yet timid about the “pume – wee” (Mende for white man)

Children work hard in Sierra Leone. This girl and her brother (below) had just come from the bush where they were cutting and gathering fire wood for the evening cooking.

Margaret is an orphan and a dear little friend. She is holding a cloth bag made for her by Annie Jones, one of the young ladies in our home church.

There are children everywhere in Baomahun

When we are engaged in public evangelism, we always have a group of little ones tagging along

Margaret, back, is an orphan

In Sierra Leone, orphans are usually cared for by extended family but are little more than slaves and do not have the privilege of going to school

Little Fragments Bible Class

This is a great outreach into families we might not otherwise be able to reach

Mohamed, right, is from a Muslim family and is in regular attendance where he is learning Bible stories and quoting verses

Playing a review game

This portion of the game was the hardest as the children had to read the words to be able to put it on the felt board

Girls are not usually schooled so I was quite delighted when this young lady could read the simple words “fish and birds”

Coloring day is always grand fun

Having never been to school, many of the children did not know what to do with the crayons and colored pencils but they quickly learned and had a great time
